Diversity Round Table names 2013 Best Practices winners

The Diversity Round Table recognized winners of the 2013 Best Practices Awards at the Greater Lafayette Commerce annual dinner in September at the Purdue University Memorial Union. The winners are listed below.

Grateful Heart Gallery & Gifts
Finding cultural common ground is a high priority for Grateful Heart Gallery. Grateful Heart has shown diversity and inclusion in its displayed galleries. Grateful Heart opened its door to two interns from mainland China this summer, giving them an opportunity to work with a small gallery. In 2012, Grateful Heart sponsored performances by two internationally known African drum masters, Bolokada Conde and Yaya Cabo. Grateful Heart guest artists this year have included Bao Shan, from China and the ALMA West African Dance Troupe. Grateful Heart recently opened a new show featuring Latina artist Elias Garza.

DRT Diversity Leader Award – Individual
Mike Piggott, Community Relations Director, Purdue University
Mike Piggott has a long history of advocating for diversity going back to his work as news director and general manager at WLFI-TV, where he recruited at minority journalism conferences and took personal responsibility to make sure minorities had roles in front of and behind the camera. Piggott continued his diversity activism when he went to work at the university, taking active roles in the Diversity Roundtable through his work with the Greater Lafayette Commerce, and the Tippecanoe County Human Relations Commission. He helped create and continues to promote the "Willingness to Serve" database and helped round up funding and played a critical role in the DRT's Diversity Climate Survey. Piggott co-chairs the Greater Lafayette Commerce's "Good to Great" initiative, designed to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Tippecanoe County, where the initiative's diversity goal – Making Greater Lafayette a place for all people – is its top priority.

DRT Diversity Leader Award – Nonprofit
Art Museum of Greater Lafayette
Since its founding in 1909, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette has used its halls to display a diverse and inclusive works of art and provided opportunities and a cross-section that represents the greater community. Founder Laura Anne Fry was the first woman department head at Purdue University (industrial arts). The first work of art purchased was the "Cruise of the Elida" by F. Louis Mora, considered today as America's first Hispanic master artist. In more recent years, the art museum as regularly collaborated with the Purdue Black Cultural Center for Black History Month displays, with the Asian Americans of Greater Lafayette for its commUNITY exhibits and the Sacred Spaces of Islam: mosque designs and related arts exhibit. The museum has also partnered with Purdue's Latino Cultural Center for past exhibits.
